Manchester United were briefly linked to Marc Cucurella, but he is now on his way to Real Madrid to link up with Jose Mourinho.

It was confirmed over the weekend that Real Madrid have an agreement to sign Marc Cucurella, with the Spaniard going to bolster Jose Mourinho’s squad.

Cucurella’s move could complicate United’s interest in Lewis Hall as Chelsea could now compete for his signature.

But Cucurella’s arrival in Madrid also poses a problem for Carrington graduate Alvaro Carreras, who could tumble down the pecking order under Mourinho.

Alvaro Carreras faces new challenge at Real Madrid

United believe Carreras is ‘one who got away’ from Old Trafford, as he was sold for just £5 million back in 2024.

There was regret over the way Carreras was allowed to leave the club, especially as he went on to make a £50 million move to Real Madrid.

However, while Carreras was “incredible” at Madrid at first, his reputation has dwindled in recent months and it seems he faces an uphill battle to try and salvage his starting spot under Mourinho.

Cucurella’s big-money arrival at the Bernabeu suggests he will be the starting left-back under Mourinho.

Where Carreras fits into Mourinho’s project is yet to be seen.
