Brentford manager Thomas Frank has emerged as one of the leading candidates to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag was sacked by Manchester United on Monday morning after the terrible start to the season continued with a 2-1 defeat to West Ham.

United chiefs were in total agreement about Ten Hag and called an end to his time at Old Trafford just over two years after he was appointed.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has become interim manager and remains one of the potential replacements for Ten Hag.

But there will be plenty of competition for the vacancy, and one of the leading contenders is Brentford’s Thomas Frank.

Thomas Frank linked with Man United job

Frank has impressed with Brentford in the Premier League and his links to United date back to well before Erik ten Hag was sacked.

Earlier this month, Frank admitted he was “open” to offers to leave Brentford having taken charge of the Bees for the past six years.

Even more recently, Frank praised Ten Hag as he assessed the situation at Old Trafford and the Brentford boss also admitted he wants to challenge himself at a bigger club.

One issue standing between Frank and the United job is that he is currently employed and would therefore demand a big fee to release him from his current contract.

Other candidates such as Xavi Hernandez and Edin Terzic are unemployed and available.

What Thomas Frank said about replacing Erik ten Hag

Frank was speaking to the press ahead of Brentford’s Carabao Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night, and he was asked whether he would hold talks with United over the manager job.

He admitted he is “very happy” at Brentford, but left the door open to a change with his final two words.

As per Sky Sports, Frank said: “You’re right, it is a very delicate question. I have a big responsibility to Brentford football club, the fans, Matthew [Benham], the leadership, players, staff.

“I have one focus which is to do the very best to beat Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow in the Carabao Cup and focus on that.

“I have said many, many times I am very happy here. I think it’s one of the best clubs in the world.

“What happens in the future? Who knows.”
