Who is the Man United interim manager? Meet the team replacing Erik ten Hag after sacking

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made one of his biggest decisions yet since completing his partial takeover of Manchester United by dismissing manager Erik ten Hag.

The Dutch coach took over in July 2022, moving over from Ajax after an impressive spell in the Eredivisie and deep runs into the Champions League.

While there were bumpy times at Old Trafford under his stewardship, Ten Hag landed two trophies in two successive seasons – landing the Carabao Cup and FA Cup with Man United.

Cup runs appeared to be a speciality, but in the Premier League, there were clear problems with the team.

A debut campaign finish of third was quickly forgotten as the following season brought about an eighth-placed finish.

The current season hasn’t started much better, with a recent defeat to West Ham sinking the side to 14th and ending Ten Hag’s reign.

There are, however, some big games coming before the international break brings a potential pause for the side.

Who is the Man United interim manager?

In a club statement, Manchester United confirmed that former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over as the interim coach.

The 48-year-old joined the backroom staff at Carrington in the summer to help strengthen Ten Hag’s team.

Van Nistelrooy is set to be helped by the rest of the Man United coaching team, which includes Rene Hake, Andreas Georgson, Jelle ten Rouwelaar, Richard Hartis, Craig Mawson and more.

What games will the Man United interim manager have?

As it stands, it is unknown when Man United will confirm their next permanent appointment for the head coach role.

With some time likely to be taken over the situation, it could give Van Nistelrooy plenty of time to audition for the role himself.

In terms of Premier League games, these are the next ten that the interim manager could face before the turn of the year.

The first challenge, however, will be in the EFL Cup against Leicester City on Wednesday night, while Europa League action against PAOK awaits the following week.

What is Ruud van Nistelrooy’s managerial record?

Van Nistelrooy made his way through the coaching ranks at PSV Eindhoven, where he was eventually named the head coach.

The ex-striker spent just one year in the role, leaving in 2023 after 50 games managed for the side.

His record across all competitions was:

Wins34
Draws8
Defeats8

In all, he had a league record of 2.2 points per game, which was impressive enough, along with winning the Dutch Cup and Dutch Super Cup.

He will now be tasked with getting United back on track before a final decision is made on the next manager.
