Senior players questioned one Erik ten Hag policy at Man United, it ended up costing him his job

It seems Manchester United players lost faith in Erik ten Hag’s ideas during his final days as manager.

Manchester United chiefs decided enough was enough and Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday morning, less than 24 hours after the 2-1 defeat to West Ham.

Ineos had kept faith with Ten Hag over the October international break but there were still no signs of progress in the last three matches.

United’s hierarchy were in total agreement about sacking Ten Hag after the woeful start in the Premier League and Europa League.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is now set to take interim charge, starting with Wednesday evening’s League Cup clash against Leicester City.

Erik ten Hag praised the performance of his players after losing to West Ham, but reports suggest the dressing room had started to question his methods.

Senior Man United stars questioned one Erik ten Hag policy

After the injury crisis last season, Ineos backed Ten Hag over the summer and strengthened the squad depth with five major signings.

Ten Hag started the season with two strong options for every position across the pitch, and with a fully-fit squad he was expected to show progress.

However, according to talkSPORT, senior players in the United dressing room questioned Ten Hag’s rotation policy with the Dutchman making some eyebrow-raising decisions in recent weeks.

Ten Hag was eager to spread minutes evenly between players, but it led to some bizarre decisions such as the withdrawal of Marcus Rashford against Porto despite his incredible first-half performance.

The lack of game time for summer signing Manuel Ugarte was also baffling, given he was “excellent” against Fenerbahce.

Erik ten Hag regrets from final Man United season

When he looks back on his final few weeks as United manager, Ten Hag will likely have some big regrets about how he handled things.

In fairness, Ten Hag seemed to be prioritising the long-term picture at United by resting and rotating players.

But ultimately, not playing his in-form players regularly may have cost him his job. It unsettled the balance of the team, cost United valuable points and caused the dressing room to start questioning his methods.

There are plenty of matches this season where United should have picked up more points and if Ten Hag scrapped his rotation policy then he may have relieved some of the pressure around his job.
