The hierarchy at Manchester United ran out of patience with Erik ten Hag following the 2-1 defeat to West Ham.

Erik ten Hag repeatedly insisted that everything was rosy behind the scenes at Old Trafford and that the club’s new-look hierarchy were fully behind him.

But that didn’t turn out to be the case and Ten Hag was sacked as United manger on Monday morning following Sunday’s defeat at the London Stadium.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has stepped in as interim, with the United legend set to take charge for the first time on Wednesday evening against Leicester City in the League Cup.

The decision comes just weeks after the United bosses decided to keep faith with Ten Hag over the October international break.

Man United chiefs ‘unanimous’ decision to sack Erik ten Hag

There have been huge changes behind the scenes at Old Trafford since Sir Jim Ratcliffe‘s takeover, and newly-appointed CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth were the key decision-makers behind Ten Hag’s future.

The United hierarchy turned down two chances to sack Ten Hag, with the first coming in the summer before Berrada and Ashworth had officially joined.

Their patience finally ran out this week, and reports suggest that everyone at boardroom level were in total agreement.

According to Daily Mail journalist Mike Keegan, the decision to sack Ten Hag was “difficult” but “unanimous”.

He claimed that club chiefs “could find no excuses” for Ten Hag’s poor start to the season in the lead-up to his sacking.

Keegan sums it up by saying United’s leaders “were just not seeing improvement” – something fans will likely agree with.
