Bruno Fernandes has revealed how Michael Carrick transformed Manchester United after Ruben Amorim’s reign at Old Trafford came to an end in the 2025-26 season.
Ruben Amorim was in charge as Manchester United manager for only 14 months before Ineos sacked the 41-year-old Portuguese coach back in January.
United had endured a turbulent period at Old Trafford under Amorim after the former Sporting CP boss had replaced Erik ten Hag in the dugout in 2024.
Amorim’s exit from Man Utd paved the way for Darren Fletcher’s brief caretaker managerial run before Michael Carrick returned to Old Trafford last season.

Bruno Fernandes on what Man Utd players felt under Michael Carrick after Ruben Amorim was dismissed
Michael Carrick has permanently succeeded Ruben Amorim at the Premier League club after the Manchester United legend’s impact as interim head coach.
The 44-year-old Red Devils boss chalked up 12 Premier League wins from 16 matches as interim manager before his permanent appointment was made in May.
Carrick’s reign as the new Man Utd head coach began in winning ways on the final day of the 2025-26 season after the Red Devils defeated Brighton 3-0 at the Amex.
Speaking to ESPN, Bruno Fernandes insisted that Carrick’s ‘positivity’ was immediately felt in the Old Trafford dressing room in the post-Amorim era.
“I think he brought a very positive energy to the team, he tried to be very positive, because obviously we were in a moment of coaching transition, which is always a difficult time for the team,” he said.
“He tried to be positive, obviously, he brought new ideas and a different way of playing, which was also important for some players to find an escape to be protagonists again.”
Michael Carrick now has more wins than Ruben Amorim this season in seven fewer games! What does this tell you…?
Bruno Fernandes on the Michael Carrick effect at Old Trafford in the post-Ruben Amorim era at Man Utd
Fernandes saw a turnaround in form under Carrick’s Man Utd tactics last season and the 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder broke the Premier League assist record.
The Man Utd captain added that Carrick’s impact at Old Trafford was shown with the Red Devils’ scintillating run of form under him in the 2025-26 campaign.
“And it’s been good, obviously, because the results demonstrate that, too,” Fernandes continued.
“We hope that we will continue to do so.”
Carrick inherited a United team that were seventh in the Premier League table in January and subsequently led the Red Devils to a third-place finish in May.
