Michael Carrick will continue as Manchester United head coach in a permanent capacity.

In January, Michael Carrick accepted the role of interim head coach at Manchester United until the end of the season.

The former United midfielder was responsible for a significant upturn in form as the team secured third place in the Premier League and secured Champions League for next season.

Carrick has won 11 of his 16 games since then.

Formal talks between Carrick and Ineos began last week, leading to an official announcement ahead of Sunday’s final game of the season away at Brighton.

Man Utd announce Michael Carrick as permanent head coach

Carrick has been dealing with the same questions about his future for months.

With every win, as well as securing Champions League qualification with United beating Liverpool 3-2 at Old Trafford earlier this month, it became increasingly likely that Ineos would stick with Carrick.

It has now been confirmed on United’s official website that Carrick has signed a two-year deal to remain head coach until 2028.

Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, told club media: “Michael has thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue leading our men’s team. In the time he has been doing the role, we have seen positive results on the pitch, but more than that, an approach which aligns with the club’s values, traditions and history.

“Michael’s achievements in leading the club back to the Champions League should not be understated. He has forged a strong bond with the players and can be proud of the winning culture at Carrington and in the dressing room, which we are continuing to build.”

Michael Carrick wants to challenge for the biggest honours at Man Utd

As with every United manager or head coach, the objective of the job is to compete for the biggest honours.

United fans crave Premier League success, and it has been 13 years since Sir Alex Ferguson delivered his last league title and retired as manager.

Carrick was part of that squad and he wants to bring the glory days back to Old Trafford.

Speaking about his new deal as United head coach, Carrick said: “From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United.

“Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.

“Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.

“Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.”
