Wes Brown hails ‘explosive’ Man Utd star as sharpest player in pre-season, and makes feelings clear on Leny Yoro

Manchester United’s pre-season tour is over and the start to the 2024/25 season is getting nearer.

It would be hard to frame Manchester United’s pre-season tour as a success, given the injuries to Leny Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund.

There were some interesting takeaways from United’s tour, including positive signs of a more structured team, along with some impressive individual performances.

United are now preparing for the Community Shield, ahead of the Premier League opener against Fulham.

Wes Brown impressed with Leny Yoro

Leny Yoro played 45 minutes for Manchester United against Rangers and then 35 minutes against Arsenal, before being forced off with an injury.

It was later revealed Yoro has a fractured metatarsal, meaning he will spend three months out. It is an awful outcome for the 18-year-old, who will hope to eventually follow Kobbie Mainoo’s lead by establishing himself midway through the season.

From the 80 minutes we did see of Yoro, the teenager made a positive impression. Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown says he liked what he saw.

Speaking to Stretford Paddock on YouTube, Wes Brown explained: “I like his energy, he’s quick, he’s young, he’s athletic, I think that’s everything we need.

“We know Martinez, what he can do, it’s a shame we haven’t got to see that [Yoro and Martinez together] at this time, but that’s what you need in the first team, athletic, young players. He’s confident, played in the first team at Lille, hopefully he fits in straight away.”

Amad is United’s ‘sharpest player’

One player who has thankfully maintained his fitness is 22-year-old winger Amad, who has scored two goals and created 10 chances in his four appearances.

The Ivorian was singled out for praise from Wes Brown, who added: “He’s explosive, he’s not shy, he’s probably looked the sharpest player.

“He’ll be looking for himself to keep training well and play well when he does play, because he’ll be looking at a few starts. If you’re playing well I think you deserve a chance.”

Amad has been praised by Erik ten Hag, who added that he is pleased with his off-ball work along with his quality in possession.

The young winger finished last season with a flourish, and it has appeared he is ready to carry on where he left off.

With Alejandro Garnacho returning late to pre-season due to the Copa America, Amad’s early sharpness could be really useful to United early on in the campaign in particular.
