Wes Brown claims one ‘naturally athletic’ Man Utd player was playing with fear when Ruben Amorim was manager

Wes Brown has insisted that he has seen the night-and-day difference in one Manchester United star under Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick at Old Trafford this season.

Ruben Amorim saw both the highs and lows during his time at the Premier League club before the former Manchester United manager was sacked back in January.

The 41-year-old former Sporting CP head coach had first arrived at Old Trafford during the 2024-25 Premier League season after Erik ten Hag had been dismissed.

However, Amorim was only in charge at United for 14 months before the Portuguese coach met the same fate as ex-Ajax boss Erik ten Hag at the Premier League club.

Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko become second ever PL trio to score 10+ goals in debut season🔥

What an incredible achievement, how many goals should they each be aiming for in 2026/27?

Wes Brown on Benjamin Sesko under Ruben Amorim and the Man Utd striker’s transformation under Michael Carrick

Benjamin Sesko arrived at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United managerial reign after Ineos strengthened the Red Devils’ attacking set-up.

The 22-year-old Slovenia striker went his first five Premier League matches without scoring under Amorim before he netted against Brentford last September.

Sesko struggled to pick up consistent goalscoring momentum during Amorim’s reign, but the United forward has found his footing under Michael Carrick this season.

The Slovenia international has netted seven times in 13 Premier League matches during Michael Carrick’s interim head coach reign at Old Trafford so far.

Speaking to The Athletic, Wes Brown said: “I watched him carefully and I could tell he was a footballer playing with a bit of stress. Not now.

“Michael Carrick has put an arm around him and he looks confident, whereas he didn’t before. He expresses himself. He plays without fear.

“We didn’t see that much under Amorim, for whatever reason. But we are now.”

Wes Brown talks up Benjamin Sesko’s potential since Man Utd signed the Slovenia striker

Sesko has reached double digits for his goalscoring figures in his debut campaign at Old Trafford, with the striker netting 12 times in 32 matches across all competitions.

Brown added that it was not difficult to see the quality that Sesko possessed in his arsenal after Man Utd splashed out to sign him from German side RB Leipzig.

“You could see the potential in Sesko after he arrived, but the goals weren’t quite coming,” he explained.

“He’s quick, naturally athletic, good in the air. As a defender, you do not want him running into space near you.

“But it’s also tough when you just arrive in a new league and country and you’re a young lad.”

United agreed an initial transfer fee of £66.3m, as part of an overall £73.7m deal, to bring former RB Leipzig striker Sesko to Old Trafford in 2025.
