Sam Allardyce claims ‘extremely sharp’ Man Utd star has had his ‘best season’ ever at Old Trafford

Former England manager Sam Allardyce has showered praise on Luke Shaw after the Manchester United defender’s run of form in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign.

Luke Shaw has defied all expectations for the Red Devils after impressing under both Ruben Amorim earlier in the season and later under interim boss Michael Carrick.

The 30-year-old Manchester United star played as a left-sided centre-back under Ruben Amorim, while Michael Carrick has since shifted him back to left-back.

Shaw has been able to overcome an injury-hit spell at Old Trafford and the England international has started in all 37 Premier League matches for his side so far.

Sam Allardyce on the importance of England and Man Utd star Luke Shaw avoiding a serious injury in the 2025-26 campaign

Luke Shaw has been able to put in steady performances one after another by not being sidelined over the course of the 2025-26 Premier League season.

The former Southampton star’s 2024-25 campaign had been heavily disrupted by injuries and Shaw has been able to bounce back in a major way for the Red Devils.

Speaking on his podcast, Sam Allardyce said that there were no doubts that Shaw had produced his best season for United to date since his Southampton transfer.

“Luke Shaw. Yeah, well, he’s just… he’s had the best season he’s had since he’s been at Man United,” he explained on No Tippy Tappy Football.

“But the doubt will always be the injury. The injuries are always there for him; he’s done well. And again, that would be done to Michael [Carrick]’s staff and the coaching.

“You know what would be happening now, all of a sudden, he sees his career coming to an end and thinks, what the bloody hell? Because he used to get slaughtered by Jose [Mourinho], saying he was too fat.”

Sam Allardyce thinks that Man Utd defender Luke Shaw has done enough to earn an England call-up

Despite his impressive run of form this season, Shaw was not called back up to the England squad under Thomas Tuchel during the March international break.

It remains uncertain whether England manager Thomas Tuchel will consider rolling the dice with the United defender for his Three Lions squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Former England boss Allardyce talked up Shaw’s United run of form and wants the Three Lions left-back to play for England again at this summer’s World Cup.

“So, he’s had the talent, but without the dedication for me, and that’s where the injuries came about,” he continued.

“And he’s kept himself fitter now than he has for a long time. And still looks extremely sharp and playing it very, very well.”

Allardyce added: “Would you be surprised if he’s gone left-back for England? I wouldn’t.”

Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Tuchel is now set to announce his 26-man England squad for the World Cup tournament on Friday.
