When it comes to Manchester United’s greatest list of players, Wayne Rooney is a certain inclusion at the top end of the list.

The Liverpudlian was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson as a teenager, but even those who sanctioned the £25m transfer could have anticipated things going so well.

Wayne Rooney became one of the best footballers of the 21st century, while he is Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer, which is a record that won’t be beaten anytime soon with Marcus Rashford now exiting the club.

However, United will hope that this summer has seen transfers for players who could be well north of the 100 goal mark by the time the club turns 150 in 2028.

Bryan Mbeumo was signed earlier this week by United, ending a six week long pursuit and adding one of the very best attackers in the Premier League.

Mbeumo is not alone as an attacking addition this summer, as United also completed the signing of Matheus Cunha, with the Brazil international alongside Mbeumo as a huge talent.

Now, Wayne Rooney has been asked his thoughts on the business.

Wayne Rooney compares Matheus Cunha with Eric Cantona

United signed two of the best forwards in the Premier League, and both are now over in the USA for the pre-season tour with their new teammates.

There is also another duo Stateside in the form of Rio Ferdinand and Rooney, with the pair featuring on the Ineos Grenadier YouTube channel on a road trip in the car.

During the video the pair discussed several topics, with one seeing Ferdinand tell Rooney about Cunha getting the number 10 shirt at United, before asking the former number 10 his thoughts on the Brazilian.

“Do you like him? [Cunha]”, Ferdinand asked.

“Yeah, I do”, Rooney responded.

Ferdinand added: “We were talking about it weren’t we? You want a bit of devilment and a little bit of spice [wearing the number 10].”

Rooney then concluded: “You look back at like [Eric] Cantona and Stevie [Steven Gerrard] at Liverpool, they had that little bit of fight and that rubs off on the other players as well. So I think it’s a good signing from that point of view definitely.”

Cunha was also compared to Cantona by Omar Berrada, however, he still needs to earn the tag.

Matheus Cunha sees himself in Wayne Rooney at Manchester United

While Rooney sees Cunha as having Cantona-esque tendencies in terms of his character, in terms of playing style, the United £62.5m signing disagrees.

Speaking after joining the club, Cunha said that he plays like Rooney.

“I remember the whole squad from the time when I started to watch. You know, in the front there was Rooney, wow.

“[He is] Someone I think I have a lot of [similarities with] in my game, because I always give everything.

“I remember he was the number 10 on his shirt and everyone loved the skills, but he brings more, he always goes to the grass to take the ball, and you know he has a lot of energy inside him.”

Cunha is also following in Rooney’s footsteps with the number 10 shirt.
