Wayne Rooney has opened up on how much he earned during his time as a Manchester United player.

During much of his time at Manchester United, Wayne Rooney was considered one of the very best players in the Premier League, if not the world.

Rooney broke United’s all-time goalscoring record, netting 253 goals across his 13 years at the club.

However, his time at Old Trafford wasn’t always smooth sailing. Rooney handed in a transfer request in 2010 before reversing his decision and signing a long-term contract at the club.

Rooney was deservedly among the highest-paid players in the world, but the details of his biggest contract are eye-watering.

How much Wayne Rooney earned at Man United

Rooney boasts a net worth of £170 million from his player earnings, managerial earnings and sponsorship deals.

Speaking on The Overlap, Rooney was asked by Gary Neville about the details of his contracts at United.

“What would your biggest contract have been at United?” Neville said. “I was your teammate in 2010/11 on £1.75 million, I’m captain.”

“The biggest I’ve been on is about £17 million a year,” Rooney replied.

When broken down, it means Rooney was earning just over £325,000 per week at United. It likely came in 2014 when he signed a four-year contract extension at Old Trafford.

Only Casemiro earns more than Wayne Rooney’s peak

Ineos have been trying to wrestle control of United’s wage bill since taking charge of the club, with several top earners leaving in recent years.

In the current squad, Casemiro is the highest earner on a wage of £350,000 per week – although that figure will have dropped in the 2025/26 season with no European football.

Marcus Rashford earns £325,000 per week on his current deal, meaning he matches the salary paid to Rooney. However, part of his wages are now covered by Barcelona during his loan deal.

Current club captain Bruno Fernandes earns £300,000 per week, equating to £15.6 million per year.
