On a day when Manchester United slipped to a FA Cup exit, Facundo Pellistri provided some reason to be positive while out on loan.
Pellistri was Alaves’ star player in their 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Considering Alaves are battling relegation and conceded four to Sociedad and five to Barcelona, losing to Atletico by just a single goal wasn’t too bad a result.
Pellistri impressed and won rave reviews on social media for his lively performance.
The United loanee completed 90 minutes for the first time and showed he is really getting to grips with La Liga.
He was a constant danger, willing to take players on and use his pace to counter attack down Alaves’ right side.
Pellistri was direct, running to the touchline to whip in a dangerous cross, while always looking to play forward, rather than stop and turn.
The Uruguayan completed four successful dribbles, the highest of any Alaves player and only bettered by Atletico’s Yannick Carrasco (5).
He was one of only three Alaves players to land a shot on target, and his performance was lauded on social media.
Positive signs
Pellistri is doing well to be getting regular playing time in La Liga. It beats featuring for United’s under-23s.
Alaves is a tough club for him though, with the team struggling badly. They enjoyed just 38 per cent of possession against Atletico.
It makes it tough for Pellistri to have any real success, instead he just shows flashes of potential. He’s making some encouraging steps, and next season he probably needs to find a better loan club if he is sent out again.
Pellistri needs to play, but he also needs to play for a winning side. His recent performances should prompt plenty of enquiries from clubs during the summer.
