United face decision on Facundo Pellistri loan, amid Championship interest
Manchester United will have to decide whether to terminate Facundo Pellistri’s loan spell in Spain, amid interest from Championship sides.
The 20-year-old is in the midst of a second loan spell at La Liga side Alaves, but he has struggled to establish himself in the side.
The Uruguayan has made 19 appearances this season, six of which have been starts, but he has only played 679 minutes of football, so far this campaign, which equates to nearly 36 minutes per match.
After missing the 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad due to testing positive for Covid-19, Pellistri came off the bench to play five minutes against Athletic Bilbao at the weekend.
During his first spell at Alaves, which came in the second half of last season, Pellistri played 539 minutes across 12 appearances, which averaged around 45 minutes of action per game.
Although Pellistri has returned to familiar surroundings his playing time has actually reduced.
Alaves changed managers last month when José Luis Mendilibar replaced Javier Calleja. Pellistri’s future at Alaves will depend on where he stands with his new manager.
Although United do have an option to recall him this month as part of a clause in his loan agreement, which stated they could terminate the deal early if he had not played 1,000 minutes before the start of December.
The Manchester Evening News claim that a number of Championship clubs have already shown an interest in signing Pellistri if he does return to the club this month, but the decision is still expected to lie with the Spanish club who currently sit 18th in La Liga.
Alaves travel to Real Betis tonight, so it will be interesting to see if Pellestri features.
If the Spanish side do decide to terminate the youngster’s deal, United are seemingly not short of suitors, but the most important thing will be finding a suitable club where he will be given regular first team football at senior level.
Facundo Pellistri, who scored against Derby County in pre-season, is yet to make his competitive Manchester United debut after being signed from Penarol in October 2020.
