‘Tough’ Man Utd ace’s display vs Leeds showed ‘all’ of ‘qualities’ that Ruben Amorim wants, ‘everyone’ feels same way

Ruben Amorim now has a Manchester United player that “everyone is excited” about after the Red Devils’ pre-season opener against Premier League rivals Leeds United.

That is according to Patrick Dorgu, who revealed two key details that he spotted from one of his Manchester United teammates’ performances on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils returned to action for the first time on the weekend since the end of the 2024-25 Premier League campaign and the two-match post-season tour of Asia.

Ruben Amorim and his men kicked off their pre-season tour last week in Sweden and United met Leeds United at the Strawberry Arena in Solna on the weekend.

United produced a relatively steady showing in Stockholm for their opening pre-season friendly of the summer tour ahead of the US leg of the campaign.

However, neither Amorim’s men nor Daniel Farke’s side could break the deadlock in the first half and United and Leeds played out a 0-0 draw in the second half as well.

Patrick Dorgu explains what he saw from Matheus Cunha’s Man Utd debut under Ruben Amorim vs Leeds United

Matheus Cunha arrived at Manchester United in June and Ruben Amorim wasted no time rolling out his marquee summer signing in Saturday’s 0-0 draw in Sweden.

United landed Matheus Cunha from Wolves after triggering the 26-year-old Brazilian attacker’s release clause, with the Red Devils paying a £62.5m fee for the player.

Cunha linked up with his United teammates for pre-season training under Amorim at the Carrington training complex earlier this month ahead of the summer tour.

Amorim’s tactical system for United is built for a player like the Brazil international and Cunha played as the left-sided No 10 against Leeds United on the weekend.

Patrick Dorgu, who came off the bench for the second half of United’s 0-0 draw against Leeds, was impressed with Cunha’s early showing for the Red Devils.

“He’s a tough player, he did really well last season with Wolves,” he said, as per the Manchester Evening News.

“Hopefully, he can bring all the good qualities to us.

“You can see today he’s good carrying the ball, he’s good in the small combination play.

“He can score goals and that’s what we need. I think everyone is excited to see him play.”

What did Ruben Amorim say about Matheus Cunha’s debut performance for Man Utd in the 0-0 draw vs Leeds United?

Matheus Cunha played the opening 45 minutes of United’s pre-season friendly against Leeds before Amorim hooked him off for Mason Mount at half-time.

Speaking after the match, United manager Amorim admitted that he already has an expectation for Cunha to deliver after the former Wolves ace’s form last season.

“We watched that during last season in a different team,” he told MUTV, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“So we expect the same thing.”

Amorim added: “Of course, you can see that the connection between him and Bruno is still not there.

“But it is going to be a good connection because you can put a player like Kobbie Mainoo there or Mason Mount there.

“So we have to increase our quality in the final third.”

United will now face fellow Premier League sides West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton in the United States for the next leg of their pre-season tour this summer.
