How Tyrell Malacia fared during 7-1 Champions League disaster, one silver lining

Manchester United’s list of loanees is long and included two players set for Champions League action this week.

January saw Ruben Amorim get off to a pretty ruthless start at Old Trafford. With a handful of players clearly not in his plans, Manchester United used the loan market.

Marcus Rashford joined Aston Villa on loan, with the Birmingham-based side having an option to purchase the winger. Tuesday night saw him in action for Villa in the Champions League.

Elsewhere, another United loanee getting to walk out to that famous Champions League anthem was left-back Tyrell Malacia.

After struggling to find his feet for Amorim, Malacia joined PSV on loan in January and has so far had a mixed time at the rivals of his boyhood Feyenoord. But Tuesday brought the worst night of his time at the club against Arsenal.

How Tyrell Malacia fared for PSV Eindhoven vs Arsenal

As the headline reveals, Tuesday was a terrible night for PSV Eindhoven as Malacia started the game and played all 90 minutes.

PSV were the home side, and yet were completely battered, dominated and humiliated by Arsenal who scored seven.

The 7-1 thrashing is the first time in Champions League knockout history that an away side have scored seven – which shows how unbelievable this result is.

Manchester United will be hoping Arsenal have scored all their goals for this week of course ahead of Sunday’s Old Trafford clash.

Despite being in a defence which conceded seven, Malacia actually didn’t play too badly, as his numbers from the game indicate.

Malacia held his own against the exciting Ethan Nwaneri, who scored but didn’t do a great deal else in the game.

Within the deal to take Malacia on loan, PSV arranged an option to buy the Dutchman for £8m should they choose to do so come June.

This is a good price for a player of his quality and after being one of the sole positives for the Eredivisie side in such an embarrassing defeat, the club’s decision-makers will feel he is a must-sign.

To perform in a 7-1 defeat says a lot about his character and so his chances of the move might actually have been boosted.

United will be keen to see Malacia leave the club, as the £8m would than pay off the £7m fee spent on signing Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno.

Malacia is a good player, unfortunately for him he isn’t a wing-back and therefore just has no place at Old Trafford under the new system.
