The five best moments from United’s 2019/20 season

Manchester United’s 2019/20 season kicked off on 11 August 2019 and finished on 16 August the following year.

Nobody expected a 370-day campaign but now it’s finally over, we’ve picked out the best five moments from a season like no other.

Marcus Rashford v Chelsea, 30 October

United’s start to the campaign was patchy but during that early-season stodge, Marcus Rashford produced a moment of genius.

To seal a 2-1 EFL Cup win at Stamford Bridge, Rashford rifled home a swerving, dipping free kick to send the away fans into raptures.

It was arguably United’s goal of the season, coming in one of three victories over the Blues in 2019/20.

Manchester City away, 7 December

United devastated City in the sides’ first meeting of the season back in December.

A rampant opening half an hour saw Anthony Martial, Daniel James and Marcus Rashford rip Pep Guardiola’s side apart time after time on their own patch.

The celebrations at full time were something to behold and it felt like the moment United were a team to be proud of again.

Scott McTominay v Manchester City, 8 March

This performance was even better than the one at the Etihad.

United were deservedly in front after Anthony Martial’s finish from Bruno Fernandes’ outrageous piece of invention when Scott McTominay came on as a late substitute.

In the closing stages, McTominay capitalised on a slack pass from Ederson and Old Trafford was absolutely rocking in the rain.

This was United’s most recent match in front of fans and it was an absolutely incredible moment; probably the best atmosphere at Old Trafford under Solskjaer.

Bruno Fernandes v Brighton, 30 June

A counter-attack goal which felt like the United of old.

Nemanja Matic’s pass was inch-perfect, Mason Greenwood ate up the ground in front of him before teeing up an onrushing Fernandes.

Marcus Rashford’s rapid selfless decoy run deserves a mention, and when the ball dropped to the Portuguese, did anyone believe he was going to miss?

It felt like watching United was fun again.

Champions League qualification, 26 July

Merely qualifying for the Champions League should never be a cause for true elation at Old Trafford.

But it was just reward for an electrifying run of form since lockdown when United’s persistence was rewarded with a third-place finish and a seat at Europe’s top table next season.

When Jesse Lingard sealed the victory at the King Power, the staff rushed off the bench and the players – including David de Gea – flooded downfield to celebrate. Job done.
