Tahith Chong’s new loan gives him a better chance to play

Tahith Chong’s loan at Werder Bremen was cut short at the weekend.

It felt like an inevitable move with the Dutchman failing to hold down a regular starting spot for the club this season.

Chong left the club having made four Bundesliga starts, nine substitute appearances, and contributing one assist.

It was not what he or Werder were looking for, and so it is a good thing an early decision was made to part ways now, rather than prolonging a situation which may only have got worse.

Chong has now moved to Belgian side Club Brugge. He posted a message thanking Werder for his time in Germany.

While his spell in Germany was disappointing, it is important now for Chong to be at a club where he has a chance to play.

Brugge are happy to have him. They sold winger Krepin Diatta to Monaco in late January for around £14 million (Sky) and needed a replacement.

Manager Philippe Clement told the club website: “Chong is a player who can bring more depth in our game, off and on the ball. You can compare him to Diatta and Dennis. Chong and Dirar are both versatile players, something we can really use in this phase of the season.”

It is fair to ask of course, if Chong could not cut it in Germany, whether he will be able to ever make it at United. Right now it’s in nobody’s interests to get too far into that.

Chong just needs to forget the negative aspects of his recent stint, and start playing regularly and making a valuable contribution for his new club, rediscovering his confidence.

If he returns to United at the end of the season as a prolific contributor in Belgium, then he might have a chance. Right now, he’s no closer to the first team than when he left.

Chong has a chance to play Europa League football with Club Brugge, a club he actually provided an assist against for United last season at Old Trafford.

His new side face Dynamo Kiev over two legs in knockout rounds, and he would be eligible to face United if the two clubs were drawn against each other.
