Tahith Chong clinched his loan move to Werder Bremen over the weekend.
Manchester United’s young Dutchman has joined the Bundesliga club on loan for the rest of the season.
The deal is just a loan move for one season, as opposed to the two-year loan previously speculated by German outlet Deichstube.
It is still a great opportunity for Chong to play regular football, after being just a fringe player for United over the past year.
The big hope here is that Chong comes back to Old Trafford next season as a more established star.
He then will stand a better chance of cracking United’s first team, will be a better player, and will have grown in confidence.
Werder Bremen is an ideal club for Chong to thrive. They play in a strong league and have a proven track record of developing top talent.
Players who thrived at Werder Bremen
Kevin de Bruyne: The Belgian was sent on loan to Werder Bremen by Chelsea boss at the time Roberto di Matteo to try and fast track his development.
It worked, with De Bruyne excelling as he scored 10 goals in 33 Bundesliga games and was expected to come back and be a regular for Chelsea.
The mistake came next as Jose Mourinho sold him to Wolfsburg, before he signed and became a star for City.
Serge Gnabry: Werder Bremen smartly pounced to sign Serge Gnabry from Arsenal for just £6 million.
The German winger scored 11 goals in 27 games and was swiftly signed up by Bayern Munich a year later.
Now he is regarded as one of Europe’s top stars, with 21 goals for Bayern this season so far.
Mesut Ozil: When Mesut Ozil lit up the 2010 World Cup with Germany and took England apart, he did so as a Werder Bremen player.
Ozil scored 11 Bundesliga goals in the preceding season, and was sold to Real Madrid that same summer.
At Madrid he enjoyed the best spell of his career, before a £42 million move to Arsenal.
Good opportunity for Chong
Chong should be inspired by the way these players have effectively been able to use Werder Bremen as a useful stopping off post in their journey to becoming top stars.
All three of Ozil, De Bruyne and Gnabry played for Bremen at similarly early stages of their careers.
Chong has an ideal opportunity to launch his own career and come back to United as a player capable of regularly challenging for the first team.
United cannot make a mistake of seeing Chong flourish at Bremen and then not giving him the stage he needs.
That was an error made by Chelsea over De Bruyne which they regret to this day.
