There is no doubt at all that the plans for the European Super League were terribly handled. It was a mess from the very start.
Plans were leaked shortly before Manchester United took on Burnley on Sunday, causing potential disruption to the team’s preparations.
The Athletic report that managerial legend Sir Alex Ferguson was left angry with the way current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was thrown in front of the cameras and left blindsided by the whole project.
The report states: “Ferguson was understood to be unhappy by the way the club’s current manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, had been left to fend questions from broadcasters and journalists.”
Juan Mata and David de Gea were also said to have been vocal in their frustration at the way the situation was handled.
Failure to consult was the key error
Failing to consult with supporters was the key mistake in the plans for the Super League.
The various owners went behind everybody’s backs, thinking arrogantly that they knew best.
Deciding not to give the football players, and managers, forewarning, was another critical error, and in the process, they managed to anger a club legend like Sir Alex Ferguson.
Ed Woodward has resigned, or brought forward an announcement over his exit, and it was the right decision. It simply had to happen.
One of the big criticisms of Woodward and the Glazers, irrespective of the debt, is that they are not football fans. They just don’t get it.
If they did, they never would have signed up to such ridiculous proposals in the first place.
Solskjaer, for his part, will get his chance to have his say at his press conference on Friday. Hopefully he does a great job of connecting with the fans, and shows that he ‘gets it’.
