Tottenham loanee Sergio Reguilon has praised Manchester United teammate Casemiro as a “leader on the pitch” and a “role model” to fellow footballers.

Reguilon signed for United on deadline day in the summer window after Erik ten Hag was left short of full-back options due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

The 26-year-old Spaniard, who has been signed on a season-long loan, impressed some fans with his debut display in United’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford.

Reguilon did receive some criticism over his defensive qualities after Danny Welbeck’s opener for Brighton, but the defender was widely praised for his attacking attributes.

Reguilon on ‘consistent’ Casemiro

Casemiro was lauded for his remarkable impact in United midfield last season after his sensational £70m move from Real Madrid.

But the 31-year-old Brazilian midfielder has come under stinging criticism from the likes of Jamie Carragher and Gabby Agbonlahor over his performances this season.

Despite the criticisms that Casemiro has received, Reguilon insisted that his United teammate is the type of player who can “push” up other players’ “intensity.”

“I have always said that he is a leader on the pitch,” he told ICS (via Manchester United’s official website).

“He brings so much energy. He is so consistent.

“I think it is so important in football nowadays to have experienced players like him, who can push everyone to step up the intensity. He is a role model.

“I mean, it’s hard to even know where to begin when you’re talking about his trophies, my goodness!”

Reguilon talks Casemiro’s support on his arrival

Reguilon previously played alongside Brazil captain Casemiro at La Liga side Madrid before he signed for Tottenham in 2020.

The Spain international revealed that Casemiro wasted no time in contacting him after he signed for United and selflessly offered his services to Reguilon.

“I really have so many good memories with him,” Reguilon admitted.

“A lot of games, training sessions and trips with him.

“He sent me a message on the first day when I arrived here, saying he could help me if I needed anything at all to do with the club — or the house — he said that he was here for anything I needed.

“I’m really grateful to him. I have so many people here who are helping me. Casemiro is one of them.

“It really makes you feel at home when you have people looking out for you from the very first day.”
