Ruben Amorim responds to questions about replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

Manchester United have axed Erik ten Hag and Ineos must now make their first managerial appointment at Old Trafford.

Sunday’s controversial defeat at West Ham United has proven to be the final game of the Erik ten Hag era.

The Dutchman saw a soft VAR call hand West Ham a winner from the penalty spot, consigning Manchester United to a 2-1 defeat.

That result leaves United 14th in the Premier League table and Ten Hag has been sacked as a result.

After more than two years in charge, Ten Hag has gone and the search for the next United manager is now well and truly on.

Ruben Amorim on Manchester United

Brentford’s Thomas Frank continues to be linked with the United job and reports suggest that United are willing to pay compensation to land a new boss.

Sporting boss Ruben Amorim is another name on the radar after working wonders with the Lisbon side.

Amorim has won two league titles and two domestic cups with Sporting, all before even turning 40.

The Portuguese coach is one of the most exciting managers in the game and it’s no surprise to see his name being linked with United.

Amorim has now told Record that he is refusing to comment on any speculation surrounding a move away from Sporting.

Sporting face Nacional on Tuesday night and Amorim seemingly doesn’t want any rumours causing problems right now.

“I’m not going to talk about my future, I said from day one that I wouldn’t comment,” said Amorim.

“I’m very proud to be the coach of Sporting,” he added when asked if he is proud to be linked with United.

United are looking at one of Amorim’s top prospects

United will surely have been impressed with Amorim’s work at Sporting.

After leaving Braga in 2020, Amorim has been nothing short of sensational for Sporting.

The links to Amorim come just as United target one of his top prospects at Sporting in Geovany Quenda.

Reports suggest that United want the wonderkid winger – and he fancies a dream move to the Premier League.

Quenda is already playing first-team football under Amorim at 17 and United will be watching both very closely.

Maybe there is a chance for Amorim and Quenda to join forces at United in the near future, but Ineos will have to get the chequebook out for such a double deal.
