Ruben Amorim will be desperate to avoid a goalless defeat this weekend at Anfield.

Manchester United against Liverpool is arguably the biggest fixture on the calendar for both sides and this weekend is Ruben Amorim’s first taste.

For United, this game couldn’t come at a worse time. Amorim is in the worst form of his managerial career. Four losses on the bounce as the Red Devils sit 14th in the Premier League – a low in the competition at New Year.

With the trip to Anfield set for Sunday afternoon, it feels like only a severe weather warning could save United.

Having already lost three games in a row, without scoring, a similar result without scoring would break a 116-year record which was set by manager at the time Ernest Mangnall in the 1908/09 season.

Bank Street was the home of United in 1909, which was the year before Old Trafford was built. This is quite a damning stat as to how bad United have been lately.

So as unlikely as it is, Amorim could follow Erik ten Hag’s footsteps and ignite his United career with a win over Liverpool.

In a bid to avoid unwanted records, Amorim could not have asked for a worse fixture than the league-leading bitter rivals who have been unconquerable for United in recent seasons.

United have not scored in eight fixtures at Anfield, and have failed to win since January 2016 when a solitary Wayne Rooney goal won the game.
