Following in the footsteps of Erik ten Hag is not something Ruben Amorim would have wanted to do, but he may have no choice.

Manchester United are in disastrous, worst-case scenario form right now, ahead of a daunting trip to Anfield.

Four consecutive defeats sees Ruben Amorim in the worst form of his managerial career.

However, things are showing little sign of improvement, with Amorim discussing relegation concerns recently, admitting it could be the scare that United need.

But without wins, this could very quickly become more than a shock tactic from the head coach, but instead a very real possibility.

This weekend presents Amorim with a huge opportunity though to kick-start his United career with a huge upset

Erik ten Hag used Liverpool clash to ignite Manchester United career

This Sunday at Anfield will not be the first time a struggling new United boss has to take on a Liverpool side who will be expecting an easy win.

It brings us back to August 2022, when Erik ten Hag had lost his opening two games in charge of United – 2-1 to Brighton and 4-0 to Brentford.

This sparked outcry and crisis interviews with Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, while also prompted United into panic-buying Casemiro for £60m.

However, it was the game against Liverpool that Ten Hag used as a watershed moment as he won 2-1 thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.

United went on to finish third and win the Carabao Cup – which Amorim can draw on as he prepares to face Liverpool.

Ruben Amorim must end four-game losing run at United

As bad as things were going under Ten Hag at the very beginning of his reign, no doubt new lows have been reached under Amorim.

This is of course no slight against Amorim, as he has taken over a squad in a far worse position and a club in complete turmoil as it attempts to rebuild.

Amorim has overseen several unwanted records, so far in his short spell as head coach, but he cannot afford for things to get much worse.

Now, with a full week of training – including more days than he has in the past month, we should see a tangible improvement against Liverpool.

With a similar set-up to what we saw against Man City, United could shock everyone with no expectations placed on Amorim here as everybody is expecting defeat.

So it is the perfect chance for things to turn around, like Ten Hag managed.
