Roy Keane and one of his former Manchester United teammates managed to put aside their differences and shared a “lovely” encounter with one another.
The 53-year-old Manchester United legend is well-known — and admired — for his stone-cold demeanour and no-nonsense attitude on the pitch and off it.
Roy Keane has continued to pull no punches with his straight-to-the-point assessments as a pundit, with the former United star often a box-office attraction.
The ex-United midfielder is considered one of the best Premier League captains of all time after his sensational spell at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Following his move from Nottingham Forest in 1993, Keane lifted seven Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and four FA Cups with United.
The Irishman was a formidable box-to-box midfielder in his prime and excelled in the middle of the park and as a leader under former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Keane’s incredible achievements at Old Trafford included famously captaining United to their iconic continental treble win in the 1998-99 season.
The Irish hardman made 479 appearances for United during his remarkable playing spell before his relationship with Ferguson fractured and he was axed from the club.
Keane and Man Utd legend’s rivalry
Roy Keane remains widely admired by his former Manchester United teammates and the Sky Sports pundit is still talked about a lot for his impact as a player.
However, the former Nottingham Forest star did not always see eye to eye with everyone, including fellow United legends Teddy Sheringham and Peter Schmeichel.
Keane and Peter Schmeichel played alongside one another under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, but the two United legends weren’t the closest of friends.
The pair famously brawled on one occasion during a United pre-season tour and Keane also famously branded former Red Devils No 1 Schmeichel as “overrated.”
Schmeichel, who is regarded as one of the best Premier League shot-stoppers of all time, recalled an encounter where both he and Keane set aside their differences.
The 61-year-old United legend said he crossed paths with Keane when his former teammate was alone having breakfast and approached him to shake his hand.
Keane then told Schmeichel to ‘sit down’ and the former Denmark international revealed that the pair had the “most lovely breakfast conversation.”
Speaking to The Guardian, Schmeichel said: “Not so much [about bonding with Keane]. Roy didn’t speak to many players but years later I’m in that big hotel in St Pancras.
“I walk into the breakfast room and there’s just one person there: Roy. I shake his hand and he goes: ‘Sit down.’
“We had the most lovely breakfast conversation and it was just weird it took so long to do that. But we were driven people and he’s very different now.”
Schmeichel on current state of Man Utd
Peter Schmeichel dropped his two cents on United’s current struggles and admitted that he is a big fan of Ruben Amorim and wants the Red Devils manager to succeed.
“Of course, it hurts [Man United’s current problems],” he told the newspaper.
“Slowly, year by year, we’ve been a little bit worse and we’ve had a lot of managers but no leadership from upstairs.
“I felt particularly sorry for Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer]. He could have done a longer job if he’d had help from upstairs, which he didn’t.
“But I really like Ruben [Amorim]. It’s the first time I’m confident we’ve got the right guy. He knows what he wants. His communication skills are terrific and he’s brave.
“He answers every question and comes across as a very strong leader. That’s what we need.”
