Rio Ferdinand would be deeply ‘surprised’ if Marcus Rashford signed for elite European club, one team is perfect fit

Rio Ferdinand has dropped his clear-cut verdict on two European clubs being linked with Manchester United star Marcus Rashford amid the January transfer window.

Marcus Rashford is tipped to leave Old Trafford after the Manchester United forward fell down the pecking order under Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim.

The 27-year-old United player has not played for the Red Devils since the club’s 2-1 comeback win over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League last December.

Ruben Amorim then dropped Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho for the subsequent Premier League match against Manchester City at the Etihad in 2024.

Alejandro Garnacho has since climbed back into the United first team under Amorim, despite the Red Devils winger being heavily linked with Napoli.

However, Rashford has not featured for Amorim since he was dropped and the England international later broke his silence over his future at Old Trafford.

Amorim said he wanted to see more from Rashford on the pitch and off it and his decision to axe him from the 2-1 Manchester City win was not a disciplinary matter.

Ferdinand backs one club for Rashford

Marcus Rashford’s form fell off a cliff under former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag in the 2023-24 campaign and he lost his place in the England squad.

The United and Three Lions star, who missed England’s Euro 2024 campaign last summer, netted only eight times in 43 matches for the Red Devils last season.

Rashford’s struggles continued in the current campaign, with the Three Lions international only scoring seven times in 24 appearances across all competitions.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Rio Ferdinand has suggested that Borussia Dortmund could be the ideal fit for Rashford if he leaves Old Trafford in January.

“In terms of personnel and players, I think Dortmund is probably a better fit in terms of what is available to him with his position,” he said, as per the Metro.

“They’ve shown that English players can go there and thrive as well.

“They’ve got a young English boy, [Jamie] Gittens, there at the moment as well but he plays that side as well.

“So, nowhere’s easy! But Marcus Rashford has the ability to go and be a player and play at most clubs but you’ve got to go and prove it now.”

Ferdinand rules out one transfer for Rashford

Rashford is under contract with United until 2028 and the Red Devils star has been linked with several clubs in Europe, including Juventus and Barcelona.

United are keen to secure a hefty transfer fee for the England forward and to offload Rashford’s wages amid his absence from the Red Devils first-team squad.

Red Devils legend Ferdinand has suggested that he can’t see Rashford signing for AC Milan due to the Serie A club already having Rafael Leao in their team.

When asked about a move to AC Milan for Rashford, he said: “I don’t know.

“Everyone’s talking about AC Milan, but AC Milan have got Rafael Leao. Unless he goes and then Marcus can go in and play that position…

“Rafael Leao is their best player and he plays the same position as Marcus, unless Marcus is gonna go and play up front. I just don’t see that being the case.

“I’d be surprised if he went to AC Milan, I’ve got to be honest, given the current players they have there in the position that Marcus plays.”
