Rio Ferdinand reveals ‘only thing’ he would be ‘advising’ one Man Utd star about, he makes ‘100 per cent’ point

Rio Ferdinand has offered his two cents on the uncertainty around Marcus Rashford at Manchester United and the all-important advice that he would share with him.

Marcus Rashford has fallen down the pecking order under Ruben Amorim and the 27-year-old Manchester United star’s long-term future at Old Trafford is in doubt.

The United forward has not played for the Red Devils since Ruben Amorim’s men came from behind to beat Viktoria Plzen 2-1 in the Europa League last December.

Amorim axed Rashford for the Manchester derby clash against Manchester City, but the England star has been unable to resecure his place in the starting XI.

Rashford has hinted that his future could be away from Old Trafford and the Three Lions international has been linked with the likes of AC Milan and Barcelona.

United manager Amorim has left the door open for Rashford to fight for his place, but the 40-year-old Portuguese has repeatedly made his position clear to the player.

Ferdinand on Rashford’s situation at Man Utd

Marcus Rashford is out of contract with Manchester United in 2028 and the Red Devils have appeared willing to sell the Red Devils star.

However, a potential roadblock for Rashford to make his exit from Old Trafford in January is the hefty wages that he commands at United.

Rashford’s form fell off a cliff last season under former United manager Erik ten Hag and the player scored only eight times in 43 appearances across all competitions.

The Three Lions forward lost his place in the England squad in 2024 and Rashford’s lacklustre form also led to him missing out on his country’s Euro 2024 campaign.

Rashford has been unable to turn his struggling form around this season, with the United player netting seven times in 24 matches in all competitions.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand argued that the England and United forward has been “over-scrutinised” in recent years.

“Manchester United, also people around Marcus, need to make sure that he leaves in the best tact mentally as well as physically,” he said.

“Mentally more importantly because I think he’s been over-scrutinised for a few years now.

“But that also comes in the territory of being a Manchester United player. And when you’re held up as one of the faces of the club then that is part and parcel unfortunately of being at Man United.

“I think it’s always easy for everyone else to assume and think what he should do but I think only Marcus and his team know what are the benefits of staying in Manchester or at United.”

Ferdinand’s advice for Man Utd star Rashford

Ferdinand insisted that he would have one piece of crucial advice for Rashford if he were his advisor amid the uncertainty around his future at Old Trafford.

The 46-year-old United legend would tell Rashford that he is “never going to be 100 per cent certain” with the decision that he will now make at his current “crossroads.”

Ferdinand continued: “What’s going to be beneficial for him leaving? But then the question is where do you go?

“So, there are a lot of questions that need answering but only he is going to be able to do that.

“The only thing I would be advising him on — if I was his advisor — is he is never going to be 100 per cent certain that the decision he makes at this crossroads is right.

“He is going to do something — whether he goes or stays — and when he makes that decision, he will still not be 100 per cent sure.”
