Manchester United have a semblance of momentum again with two wins on the trot and the performance of Alejandro Garnacho has been a major positive in both.
Garnacho was the star vs Rangers and he repeated that against Fulham when he was the best of a bad attacking bunch.
However, despite recent encouraging displays, speculation continues to swirl over Garnacho’s future, with Napoli and Chelsea linked concretely to the player.
Rio Ferdinand has now dropped a clear verdict on Man Utd potentially selling Alejandro Garnacho, laying all the game at the door of a single factor.

Garnacho being the subject of concrete transfer talk was not on many people’s bingo cards when the January transfer window began but it’s reality now.
United have rejected bids from Napoli for the player and Chelsea could soon enter the race too, with United holding firm to their valuation.
It is an open secret that Garnacho’s transfer will almost immediately fix the majority of United’s financial worries due to his status as an academy product but Rio Ferdinand is not a fan.
He said: “[Garnacho] probably doesn’t fit the profile of player that Amorim is used to having in that little half-ten space. Garnacho is naturally more an out-and-out winger but he’s somebody who has an impact regardless of where he starts.
“You can clean up some of the elements of his game but the kid has that kind of understanding where he goes and takes that game by any means.
Because of the financial rules, it’s almost incentivised for clubs to sell homegrown talent. That should never be the case.”
Financial rules becoming an excuse for clubs
Manchester United’s situation is a bit different since they’re reeling from nearly two decades of financial mismanagement under the Glazers but Rio Ferdinand makes a pertinent point with an asterisk.
While it’s true that selling academy products is better for FFP and PSR, that’s only half the story because nobody forces the clubs to sell academy products.

Selling a player in the academy to splash the cash on other players who might or might not turn out to be a success is counterproductive to what PSR was for.
The clubs can easily lean into youth development and trust the players at their disposal to develop and become first-team regulars but the need to chase shiny new toys is becoming a problem.
Even if Garnacho is sold, United need to make sure it’s an exception to the norm and not the new norm at Old Trafford.
