Real Madrid are now expected to rival the likes of Manchester United in the pursuit of a midfielder dubbed as the ‘new Casemiro,’ according to reports in Italy.
Casemiro had a prolific playing spell at Real Madrid and he lifted three La Liga titles, five Champions League trophies and a Copa del Rey with the Spanish club.
The former Real Madrid star left the Spanish capital in 2022 and completed a blockbuster transfer to Old Trafford in a deal worth up to £70m.
Casemiro impressed in his debut campaign in England under Erik ten Hag, but the Brazilian’s form has been hit-and-miss over the last two seasons.
The 32-year-old Manchester United midfielder, who has lifted a League Cup and an FA Cup with the Red Devils, has made 22 appearances in the current campaign.
Casemiro is under contract with United until 2026, but the Brazil international has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford amid interest from Al Nassr.
Madrid interested in Man Utd-linked talent
Ruben Amorim could look to sign a new midfielder for his Manchester United squad in the summer amid uncertainty around Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.
Christian Eriksen is out of contract in the summer and the 32-year-old Danish midfielder has featured sporadically for United in the 2024-25 season.
Amorim’s preferred picks in his tactical system have been former Sporting CP midfielder Manuel Ugarte alongside England star Kobbie Mainoo.
According to CalcioMercato.com, Real Madrid are now ready to step up their pursuit of Atalanta defensive midfielder Ederson, who has been linked with United.
The publication reports that Los Blancos have sent out scouts to watch Ederson this season and the 25-year-old Brazilian is on the radar for clubs in Europe.
Manchester City, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs — like United and Madrid — that have been linked with the Atalanta star.
Atalanta name asking price for Ederson
Ederson has crossed paths with Madrid twice in the 2024-25 campaign, with Atalanta losing both matches to the La Liga outfit.
The Brazil international was praised for his performances in the 2-0 Super Cup defeat last August and in the 3-2 loss in the Champions League in December 2024.
Ederson has made 115 appearances for Atalanta since his 2022 move from Salernitana and the Brazil midfielder is under contract until 2027.
It is believed that the Atalanta man could fill the moniker of the ‘new Casemiro’ if he follows in his fellow Brazilian’s footsteps by going to play for Madrid.
However, CalcioMercato reports that the likes of United and Madrid would have to offer a transfer fee of above €60m to sign Ederson from Atalanta.
