Ruben Amorim has sent a clear-cut message that he will maintain high standards at Manchester United after one key decision in the aftermath of the Liverpool match.

Manchester United picked up their first Premier League point of 2025 under Ruben Amorim on their visit to Anfield on Sunday evening.

The Red Devils produced a strong showing against the Premier League leaders and United played out a thrilling 2-2 draw against fierce rivals Liverpool.

Lisandro Martinez broke the deadlock for United in the second half before Cody Gakpo hit back for Liverpool with an important equaliser.

Mohamed Salah then successfully converted from the spot-kick to put Liverpool 2-1 up, with Amad Diallo coming to United’s rescue and netting his side’s second.

United moved to 13th place in the Premier League table after Sunday’s result at Anfield, with the Red Devils level on points with 14th-place West Ham.

Amorim sets the standard at Man Utd

Manchester United are now seven points clear of the relegation zone and the Red Devils are 13 points adrift from the Premier League top four.

Ruben Amorim and the United first-team squad were in attendance for the funeral service of Kath Phipps at the Manchester Cathedral on Monday.

Kath Phipps was the longstanding receptionist at Old Trafford and the beloved United figure had been working at the Premier League club for more than 50 years.

She passed away at the age of 85 in December 2024 and United players, managers and staff, both past and present, attended the funeral service for Phipps.

According to The Daily Mail, Amorim did not let the standards fall at Old Trafford and United players had ‘adjusted their training schedule’ on Monday.

The newspaper reports that United’s squad arrived at the Carrington training complex ‘earlier than normal’ so they could attend the service later in the day.

It is added that United players who played in the Liverpool match had a ‘recovery session’ and those who were ‘not involved trained as normal.’

Following the early training, United players then changed into their club suits and were transported to the Manchester Cathedral via the team bus.

Amorim speaks out after Liverpool match

Amorim suggested that his United players showed a “different mentality” with how they approached the Liverpool match both in the first half and in the second half.

“I think we faced this game, second half and first half, with a different mentality,” he said after the match.

“That is the difference. We can talk about the system, the technical [side], we are short, we are tall but the mentality sometimes is everything. And you can feel it.

“At the end of the game, I looked at the pitch and the guys were really tired and, sometimes, I have to explain to my players that we have to finish games like that.

“So, I think it was a good day in that aspect. I think we could have won.”
