Pundit raves about ‘sensational’ Man Utd wonderkid vs Southampton who is going to be ‘a hell of a player’

Manchester United started slowly against Southampton and needed a penalty save from Andre Onana to wake them up.

The one exception during the first 35 minutes was Amad Diallo, who did look dangerous whenever he got the ball.

Amad collected his first assist of the season in the win, after slotting a pass to Marcus Rashford – who opened his account for 2024/25.

The Manchester United youngster is enjoying a breakout season, firmly establishing himself as an untouchable starter.

Amad numbers vs Southampton

Amad created six goalscoring chances for Manchester United in the win, his best creative display in a Red Devils shirt.

United were also playing at a lower intensity in the second half, so it still felt like there was another gear Amad could have shifted into if required.

The decision to leave him out against Liverpool looks increasingly like a mistake. Amad scored a 9/10 in our player ratings in the win over Southampton.

Amad praised

Amad’s performances are making people outside United sit up and take notice. Even the radio stations where United get more criticism than praise.

Former Chelsea player Jason Cundy told Talksport on Saturday evening that even though he felt United were not as dominant as the statistics suggest – he was blown away by Amad’s display.

Cundy said: “You have three wide players right now. You have got Amad, you have got Rashford, you have got Garnacho.

“Amad first half, he was sensational. Even though United struggled, he looked he is going to be a hell of a player, by the way.

“I thought he was sensational. Even though United were poor, I thought he was the best player on the pitch.”

The first half was a back and forth match until Matthijs de Ligt scored Manchester United’s opener, set up by Bruno Fernandes after a well-worked corner kick.

Rashford opened his account with Amad’s help, before substitute Alejandro Garnacho netted a third goal in injury time, with Diogo Dalot supplying the cross.

A fourth winger will throw his name into the mix in midweek, likely, when the much-maligned Antony will get a chance in the Carabao Cup against Barnsley.

But when United return to action in the Premier League away at Palace next week, the not-so-secret weapon of Amad will be back in the starting XI.
