United went on to win the game 1-0 with Mason Greenwood hitting the winner.

De Gea’s save was praised by former star goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who said it was the best of the season so far.

Adulation for De Gea

De Gea saved Manchester United last week with a superb one on one save to deny Adam Armstrong a winner for Southampton.

The only goals to beat him so far this season are the deflected strike against the Saints and a long range effort by Leeds.

Teammate Bruno Fernandes was full of praise for De Gea, praising him on social media after the win.

Why he’s there

Speaking about the double save, De Gea told the club website: “To be honest it was super quick, I don’t have much time to think

“I made the first save and I saw the guy coming again so I just put my whole body there and I made the double save so it was a big moment in the game, because after that we scored our goal.

“So that’s why I’m here, to help the team all the time. Try to give 100 per cent every game and today was a good one.”

After last season ended in such brutal fashion for De Gea in particular in the Europa League shootout, it is great to see him looking confident once again.
