Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is not convinced that Jadon Sancho has reached his full potential at Old Trafford, despite admitting that he is a “top-quality player.”
Sancho has currently been excluded from the United first team after the Red Devils winger publicly hit back at manager Erik ten Hag over his criticisms of him.
Ten Hag had revealed that the 23-year-old United player was left out of his squad for the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in September due to his underperformance in training.
The United boss’ criticism sparked a furious response from Sancho, who dropped a bombshell statement on social media saying that he was being treated as a “scapegoat.”
The Premier League club later confirmed in a statement that Sancho would be placed on a “personal training programme away from the first team.”
Sancho, who was signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, has not issued an apology to Ten Hag at the time of writing and has not returned to the first team.
Scholes on Sancho’s failed potential at United
Sancho’s future at Old Trafford is looking bleaker by the day, with the ex-Dortmund star tipped to leave United in the January transfer window.
The former England international has attracted interest from both Europe and Saudi Arabia, with United believed to be keen to offload Sancho and his hefty wage bill.
Speaking to the YouTube channel Webby & O’Neill, Scholes was asked if Sancho had ever really reached his true potential during his spell at United so far.
Responding to the question, the ex-United midfielder said: “No. No, we haven’t. Well, I don’t think so.
“I think we’ve been shown glimpses of it at times. Great composure, you know some good goals. I think the Liverpool goal and stuff like that.
“There are glimpses and we know he’s a top-quality player, but as the manager has said, maybe he’s not living right, maybe his training is not right… well, possibly we know his training is not right from what we’ve heard and that does transpire to the football pitch and it’s just not been good enough.”
Sancho’s time at United is likely done
With each passing day, the writing is on the wall for Sancho and the United outcast appears bound for an exit from Old Trafford.
Sancho had huge expectations placed on his shoulders after his £73m move from Dortmund, with ex-United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being a huge admirer of him.
The ex-England star failed to replicate his stunning Dortmund form at Old Trafford and his fallout with Ten Hag appears to be the nail in the coffin for his United career.
Scholes, who recently shared his theory on a struggling United summer signing, is right with his critique on Sancho as fans never witnessed the player’s full potential.
