Amad Diallo stepped up for Manchester United after Anthony Martial had to be taken off against AC Milan at half-time.

United did not have a recognised striker on the bench and Diallo was given a chance to shine.

Even if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not get his later substitutes right, this one he got spot on.

Diallo scored in the 49th minute, heading in a superb pass from Bruno Fernandes which deserved to land him his 13th assist of the season.

United star Paul Pogba reached out to Amad, congratulating him on his first goal for the club.

Amad’s header was perfectly executed, and the timing of his run was spot on too, leaving Chelsea loanee Fikayo Tomori trailing in his wake.

United could not hold on for the win, with Simon Kjaer scoring an injury time equaliser.

Pogba may be needed for the second leg at the San Siro, although it is unclear at this point whether he has a chance of returning in time.

Eric Bailly was another player who congratulated Amad. He was on the pitch and ran the length of it to celebrate with his young teammate.

Bailly also acknowledged his own belated achievement, playing his 100th game for the club.

Whether Bailly plays in Milan is a fascinating call. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has selected him in all three Europa League knockout games so far.

Will he do so for a fourth time, with the game on the line? Or will he revert to type and bring Victor Lindelof back in?

Milan’s late equaliser may give Solskjaer the excuse to change up his team selection. It would be harsh to leave Bailly out, as he was impressive throughout the game and worked well alongside Harry Maguire.
