Patrice Evra has made his stance perfectly clear over what Sir Jim Ratcliffe must do at Manchester United amid uncertainty around Erik ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag has been under pressure this season after Manchester United’s lacklustre start to the 2024-25 Premier League campaign.

The 54-year-old Dutchman has won only three of his opening eight Premier League matches, with United currently 12th in the league table.

Ten Hag eased some of the pressure on his shoulders on the weekend after United completed a stunning 2-1 comeback win against Brentford at Old Trafford.

However, the United manager now faces a tough test in the Europa League on Thursday against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce side in Turkey.

Evra on Ten Hag and Man Utd

Erik ten Hag’s future at Manchester United was previously cast in doubt after Ineos launched an end-of-season review following the 2023-24 campaign.

The former Ajax boss led the Red Devils to their worst finish in the Premier League era last season, with United languishing in eighth place in the table.

However, Ten Hag signed off the disappointing campaign with major silverware after United defeated Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley in May.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos, which is in charge of football operations at Old Trafford, opted to extend Ten Hag’s contract after the end-of-season review.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Patrice Evra insisted that he would continue to show his support for Ten Hag and welcomed the silverware that the Dutchman has won.

However, the 43-year-old United legend insisted that the Red Devils must be challenging for the league and called for Ratcliffe and Co to “rebuild” the club.

“I’m a straightforward guy. Even if you put the chef as a manager, I will support any manager,” he told BBC Sport.

“Three years [Ten Hag has] been at the club and, yes, he’s won two trophies. When you’re the manager of United, what people expect from you is to win the league every year.

“We need to stop talking about the past. This is not the United it used to be. We have to rebuild it.”

Evra on Ratcliffe’s controversial Man Utd call

Ratcliffe and Ineos left United fans deeply divided last week after it was announced Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassador role would end at the end of the season.

The 72-year-old Ineos chief has been keen to cut down costs at United, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassadorial contract the latest thing on the chopping block.

Evra is the latest United legend to speak out on Ratcliffe’s decision after former Red Devils players criticised the move to axe Ferguson from his duties at the club.

“The Ferguson thing, I didn’t digest it all,” he admitted.

“Sometimes you want to tell the truth and people think as if you talk against your club and you don’t want to hurt it.

“When that legend, that legacy gets away, I don’t think fans will stay friends with you.”
