Marcus Rashford said yes to leaving Man United years before Aston Villa loan, one sacking changed everything

Marcus Rashford was in advanced negotiations with another club before he ended up staying put at Manchester United.

Just 81 seconds into Ruben Amorim’s first match as Manchester United head coach, Marcus Rashford scored against Ipswich and fans began dreaming that he would return to top form under the Portuguese manager.

However, it turned out very differently. Rashford was frozen out by Amorim in December and heavily criticised for poor training sessions.

After being left out of the United squad against Manchester City, Rashford dropped a bombshell interview revealing he wanted to leave the club.

Fast-forward a few weeks and Rashford joined Aston Villa on loan. A £40m buy option in that deal suggests he has likely played his final match for the Red Devils.

Marcus Rashford came extremely close to joining PSG

Now at Villa, Marcus Rashford is preparing for a Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain – a team he boasts a very good record against.

However, fresh reports from French outlet L’Equipe claim that Rashford was extremely close to signing for the French giants in 2022.

At the time, Brazilian sporting director Leonardo was in charge of PSG’s transfer activity and they claim he was working on a deal for Rashford to replace Neymar at the Parc des Princes.

Discussions were underway for several months and Rashford reportedly said yes to joining their project.

However, Leonardo left PSG and was replaced by Luis Campos at the end of that season. An English source claimed: “I am convinced that if Leonardo had stayed, Marcus Rashford would have signed for PSG.”

PSG’s interest in Rashford dates back to 2020 when Thomas Tuchel was in charge, and it was the German coach who recently recalled him to the England setup.

PSG could reignite interest in Marcus Rashford

While PSG missed out on a deal for Rashford in 2022, the French giants have not ruled out bringing him to Paris this summer.

As reported by MaxiFoot, new PSG director Luis Campos has been in contact with United over a potential deal for the 27-year-old.

Villa have a £40m option to buy Rashford this summer, but their willingness to trigger that clause will highly depend on whether they qualify for the Champions League again this season.

Unai Emery’s side currently sit seventh in the Premier League table so the race for Champions League football will likely go down to the wire.

If Villa don’t choose to buy Rashford, United will likely look elsewhere and it seems PSG have retained their interest.

It feels unlikely that Rashford and Amorim will mend their rift, so Ineos will be keen to find a suitor for the United academy graduate.
