Marcus Rashford posts message as crowds gather at mural

There has been an outpouring of support for Marcus Rashford over the past 48 hours.

Crowds have continued to gather at the wall mural in Withington to pay tribute to the Manchester United and England forward.

The mural was defaced in the aftermath of Sunday’s Euro 2020 final in which he missed a penalty in the shootout as England lost.

What has happened since has been fantastic to see. It started with a small handful of well-wishers covering the defaced mural with hearts to show their admiration for Rashford.

This has grown and grown to the point there are now crowds and camera crews at the mural plastering messages to Rashford, while the artwork has been restored by the original artist.

The incredible scenes have not passed Rashford by either. He sent a message out on Instagram thanking everybody for their support.

Rashford said he was overwhelmed with emotion at seeing the kind words.

The scenes have seen the community come together to praise Rashford, young and old, of different races. Rashford is a hero for his work on and off the pitch and one missed penalty will not change any of that.

The England striker came in for sick racial slurs on social media and there have been been ill-judged ‘stick to football’ critiques from MPs.

Rashford is more than a footballer, as shown for the award of an MBE for his charity work earlier this year, and that should be celebrated. At just the age of 23 he is a true inspiration for kids and adults up and down the country.
