New Atalanta manager Maurizio Sarri has responded to speculation that Manchester United could still try to sign Ederson from the Serie A club this summer.

Ederson had been tipped to become the first major Manchester United signing under Michael Carrick this summer after the Red Devils struck a deal last month.

Man Utd were prepared to pay an initial £35m transfer fee, including a further £3m in add-ons, to sign the 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder from Italian side Atalanta.

However, Ederson’s proposed move to Old Trafford was scuppered last week amid concerns around a knee injury that the Brazil and Atalanta midfielder was carrying.

Atalanta boss Maurizio Sarri says he has spoken to Ederson after the Man Utd target’s transfer collapsed

Following Manchester United’s failed move for Ederson, the Red Devils have signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa this summer.

Ederson, who is out of contract with Atalanta next summer, had been identified as a key target by Ineos for the Red Devils’ midfield rebuild ahead of the new season.

Man Utd have reportedly left the door open for exploring a move for Ederson further down the transfer window if a deal with the Serie A club becomes feasible again.

Maurizio Sarri, who was appointed Atalanta manager last month, admitted that Ederson will be part of his plans going forward after Man Utd’s deal fell through.

“[Gianluca] Scamacca has started an individual [programme] to strengthen him and prevent possible injuries, but from him and [Nikola] Krstovic I expect many goals, even more than in the past,” he said at an Atalanta press conference, as per Il Messaggero.

“Ederson will happily stay; I’ve spoken to him and he’s ready to come back early from vacation to be with us.”

Man Utd’s approach for Ederson remains open, but the Red Devils would look for another deal with Atalanta

United are reportedly keen to bring three new midfielders to Old Trafford this summer ahead of the 2026-27 Premier League season under Michael Carrick.

The Red Devils have not fully shut the door on a move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who was away at the World Cup this summer with Brazil.

However, it is believed that United would want to strike up a new deal with Atalanta instead of settling on the initial £38m transfer package agreed in June for the player.

Ederson has been at Atalanta since 2022 after he arrived from Italian side Salernitana and the Brazil international has made 180 appearances for the Serie A club.
