The Red Devils went behind to Ethan Pinnock’s header on the brink of half-time, but Erik ten Hag inspired his side to complete a second-half turnaround with Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund among the goals.

Marcus Rashford’s “incredible” cross for Garnacho kickstarted United’s comeback just minutes into the second half and the 26-year-old now has four goals and three assists in 12 appearances.

It means Marcus Rashford is already halfway to matching his tally of eight goals and six assists he managed last season.

Marcus Rashford is ‘evolving’ with new role at Man United

It was no surprise that Ten Hag started the trio of Garnacho, Rashford and Hojlund against Brentford on Saturday, but it was a shock to see Rashford line up on the right-hand side of that three.

However, it turned out to be a genius move from Ten Hag as Rashford thrived on the right wing thanks to a slight tactical tweak which allowed him to drift centrally and get involved regularly.

Ten Hag admitted he enjoyed Rashford’s display against Brentford but challenged him to maintain his performance levels. Ultimately, consistency is the only thing that has stopped Rashford from becoming a mega star.

However, the underlying figures behind Rashford’s performances this season prove that he has not only been consistent this season but that he is actually creating at a higher level than he ever has before.

As pointed out by StatmanDave, Rashford is “evolving as a playmaker” having created 1.7 open play chances and 0.64 big chances per 90 minutes this season.

That is a higher average than he has ever managed in his career to date.

Marcus Rashford returning to his best

At his best, there is no doubt that Rashford is one of the best wingers in world football.

He showed exactly why in the 2022/23 season when he scored 30 goals and made 11 assists. The challenge for Ten Hag has been keeping him at that level.

Rashford’s performance levels dropped drastically last year and he paid the price after being left out of the England squad for Euro 2024. An England revival could be on the cards under Thomas Tuchel.

However, that may have been exactly what Rashford needed. He has started this season brightly and is back among the goals and assists.

Rashford has been working hard over international breaks and it is paying off with the United academy graduate quickly returning to his best.
