What Thomas Tuchel said about Marcus Rashford in 2020 suggests England revival is on the cards

Thomas Tuchel may not be managing Marcus Rashford at Old Trafford but he does have the opportunity to recall the Man United star for England duty.

It has been nearly seven months since Marcus Rashford last appeared for England in the 1-0 defeat to Brazil in March.

The 26-year-old Manchester United star was snubbed by Gareth Southgate for England’s Euro 2024 squad and Lee Carsley also looked beyond him for the September and October international breaks.

He has experienced a turbulent year as a United player and has struggled to recreate the 30-goal season he enjoyed in 2022/23 under Erik ten Hag.

However, what Rashford was spotted doing over the international break suggests he is in the right frame of mind to return to top form.

Man United target Thomas Tuchel becomes England manager

Thomas Tuchel was one of 10 potential Erik ten Hag replacements if Ineos decided to replace the Dutchman after United’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season.

The former PSG, Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss was actually the favourite to replace Ten Hag, especially after Tuchel was extremely close to becoming United boss in the summer.

But Tuchel has now been appointed England manager which gives Rashford a blank page as he tries to revive his international career.

The Three Lions have a depth of riches up front which has made it difficult for Rashford to keep his spot while out of form for United.

But the likes of Phil Foden and Cole Palmer are still yet to deliver on the international stage like Rashford has – he has scored 17 goals in his 60 caps so far.

What Thomas Tuchel said about Marcus Rashford in 2020

It was suggested that Rashford could enjoy a resurgence under Tuchel if he became United boss, but the same applies now with his England career.

A quick glance at what Tuchel has previously said about Rashford shows that the German is a huge admirer of the United forward.

Tuchel will have bad memories of Rashford after his iconic last-minute penalty against his PSG side in the 3-1 Champions League comeback in 2019.

In fact, Rashford boasts a great record against PSG with three goals in four games against the French giants.

After Rashford scored in a 3-1 defeat to PSG in 2020, Tuchel admitted he is a big fan.

“We value him very much when he plays in England and not Parc des Princes, honestly, because (him scoring against us) gets a little bit annoying,” Tuchel told the press.

“I have met him as an opponent three times and every time I’ve met a calm and humble guy and a nice person, which is amazing. I like this mixture a lot.

“For me personally, the sporting side is clear – he’s a big threat with his speed, with his ability to score, with his determination and his finishing. He’s very precise, taking shots inside and outside of the box.

“He is super rapid on counter-attacks and strong in the air with headers. He’s had a big impact and it’s nice to see guys like him from the academy having such a big impact in a big, big club like United.”
