Marcus Rashford has just managed what he never did in a Manchester United shirt

Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford scored a brace for Barcelona to lead a spectacular victory over Newcastle.

With the Red Devils missing out on the Champions League for a second successive season, there was a bittersweet feeling for Manchester United fans seeing Marcus Rashford in action.

Ahead of the showdown with Newcastle, Rashford was desperate to score his first Barcelona goal, and he got two for the price of one.

Rashford scored two second half goals, including one header, to inflict misery on the Newcastle home crowd.

There were certainly mixed emotions for Manchester United supporters seeing Rashford light up the Champions League on the big stage.

Ruben Amorim shoved Rashford out the door in January on loan, and again in the summer, while the forward wanted a fresh start too.

And then there is the awkward fact that Rashford did what he had never done in a Manchester United shirt – he had never scored two goals in a game against Newcastle.

Rashford’s last goal against Newcastle came in the Carabao Cup Final in 2023 – although it was originally credited as an own goal.

Prior to this, his previous goal against Newcastle came in a 2021 home victory at Old Trafford, with Manchester United winning 3-1.

But what about away from home? Rashford’s last away goal against Newcastle came in a 4-1 victory for the Red Devils back in 2020.

In seven away fixtures against Newcastle for Manchester United, Rashford scored two goals. For Barcelona he did that in just one game.

His overall record was 4 goals in 15 games for Manchester United against Newcastle.

Fully motivated Rashford ready to fire

Marcus Rashford showed for Manchester United that he can be a streaky player, and Barcelona once found this out the hard way too, when he struck twice at the Nou Camp.

That was in his 30 goal season in 2022/23, but since then his performances took a major dip.

With two goals to his name in this Champions League win over Newcastle, Rashford will be ready to go on another run.

Can he get close to 30 for Barcelona? If he does, then the La Liga side will be rushing to pay Manchester United a fee next summer to buy him on a permanent basis.
