Manchester United were left still chasing second place after a disappointing 1-1 draw against relegated Fulham.

United fans were welcomed back to Old Trafford for the first time in 14 months but could not give the fans the result they wanted.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be trialling players for the Europa League final against Villareal next Wednesday and plenty of them showed why they should be on the plane to Gdansk.

Here were our pick of the best three players from tonight’s game…

Edinson Cavani

With a goal worthy of any man of the match performance, Edinson Cavani showed why the club extended the 34-year-old’s contract unitl June 2022.

He led the line brilliantly today, pressing high against Fulham’s defence and winning the ball in dangerous areas.

And then came the goal – a goal most players would never think of attempting.

After a flick-on or dummy by Bruno Fernandes, Cavani was through on goal, but instead of carrying the ball closer to goal he hit it first time from around 40 yards out, lifting it over the back-peddling goalkeeper.

There is a strong chance he will start against Villareal in the Europa League final and will feel after tonight’s game that he deserves it.

Bruno Fernandes

Fernandes was at the heart of every United attacking move tonight, with his most direct influence seen in Cavani’s goal.

He was unfortunate not to score, sending a couple of pile-drivers towards the Fulham goal.

Taking responsibility for free-kicks and driving the team forward, Fernandes was worthy of the captain’s armband.

Another stellar performance from the the Portuguese midfielder will be essential for United in next week’s final.

David De Gea

The Spaniard had little to do throughout the game but when he was called upon, he was excellent.

Especially in the 60th minute, when he made a fantastic double save from close-range.

Despite conceding a goal that he could do nothing about, De Gea should be happy with his performance.

It may well have been De Gea’s last game at Old Trafford but he saw it out with the quality and reflexes United fans have come to love him for.
