Edinson Cavani produced the type of performance for Manchester United which had fans wishing he was 10 years younger.
The Uruguayan scored a fantastic game-turning diving header to give United a second half lead, and that is only half the story.
Cavani had earlier found the net with a clinical first half strike, which was bizarrely ruled out for an earlier foul, after a VAR review.
He was visibly fuming with the decision and went on to use his frustration in a positive manner, throwing himself at Mason Greenwood’s cross in the second half to head the ball past Hugo Lloris.
This was Cavani’s eighth goal of a stop and start season and felt like the most significant.
Cavani had a poor game last week against Brighton, but also didn’t really get any real chances to work with.
He showed against Tottenham that if he is provided with opportunities, he will bury them.
There is ongoing uncertainty over Cavani’s future, and this was a big tick in favour of extending his contract.
If he can stay fit, and plays like this on a regular basis between now and the end of the season, then extending his contract looks like a no-brainer, providing he wants it.
