Manchester United will not be signing Ederson this summer so supporters have named their ideal alternative.

A £38m deal was agreed with Atalanta for Ederson at the start of June, but Manchester United have now pulled the plug on the transfer.

Ederson’s injury record was a concern for United, specifically the meniscus injury he suffered last season.

Now, United are shopping for alternative midfield targets. Andrey Santos is set to join imminently, but the Red Devils still need one or two more midfielders to arrive this summer.

Manchester United fans name their ideal midfield signing

On TalkingPoints, United supporters were asked who they would like the club to sign instead of Ederson after news broke of his deal falling through.

In truth, fans were split, but some interesting names were mentioned.

Some fans wanted to see the cash splashed on a marquee arrival from the Premier League like Adam Wharton or Alex Scott.

Alex Scott really seems to be flying under the radar at the moment. Great engine, and not afraid to get stuck in. I think he could become our midfield enforcer with a dit of coaching.

Mamadou Sangare. He had a superb season for Lens and will be about 5 million pounds cheaper. He’s only 23!

Definitely not Joao Gomes or Baleba!! If we want a dynamic midfield that offers plenty of tactical variety, then let’s get Koné and Wharton in quickly. Depending on the Rashford situation, round out the squad with Summerville and also a striker like Welbeck or Brobbey.

Leon Goretzka is a free agent. He’s 30 but we could get a couple of good years from him for not much money as we develop young players and line up future transfers in.

Manchester United still need two more midfield signings

United’s first pre-season fixture is now less than a week away, and Michael Carrick’s only fit, senior midfielder is away at the World Cup in the shape of Kobbie Mainoo.

Mason Mount is prepared to play in midfield next season after impressing there last campaign, but Manuel Ugarte is injured, Casemiro has left and Santos is yet to finalise his move and train with the squad.

United are under pressure to make this midfield rebuild work, and there were plenty of reports suggesting three midfield signings were needed.

Now that Ederson’s move has collapsed, Santos will be the first. Two more are needed.
