Ederson’s injury record makes Man United’s medical stance even more confusing

Manchester United are yet to finalise their deal for Ederson because the Red Devils want to carry out a thorough medical check.

It has been weeks since news broke of Manchester United agreeing a £38 million deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

Ederson’s late World Cup call-up stalled the move as he was involved in Brazil’s run to the Round of 16.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United wanted to complete a medical in Manchester with Ederson before finalising the move. But there have been some conflicting reports, with others suggesting there is a potential problem.

Assessing Ederson’s injury record

United fans have been left scratching their heads about what is delaying the Ederson deal. If United are insisting on a thorough medical check, is it because they are concerned about a potential issue?

Well, according to Transfermarkt, Ederson’s injury record is actually very impressive.

Throughout his career, Ederson has only ever missed 10 games through injury, across four different setbacks.

However, two of those issues did emerge in the recent 2025/26 season that caused him to miss eight matches last campaign.

Ederson’s meniscus injury is a concern

Out of Ederson’s four past injuries, the one that may raise a red flag for United is his meniscus injury suffered last season.

Meniscus tears usually take up to eight weeks to heal, or even several months if surgery is required.

There is also a high risk of a re-tear depending on the severity of the first injury.

United will be well aware about the severity of meniscus injuries after Tyrell Malcia’s injury nightmare at Old Trafford.

The Dutch defender missed the entire 2023/24 season because of his knee injury, and he never truly recovered ahead of his exit this summer.

United will be eager to do due diligence and check on Ederson’s physical fitness before signing off on a deal.
