Manchester United fans needed Bruno Fernandes to be good. Surely nobody would have dared he would be this good, so quickly?
The mid-season signing from Sporting inspired United’s victory over Manchester City, a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford.
Fernandes’ clever free-kick set up Anthony Martial for the game’s opening goal.
He scooped the ball up over the wall and into the path of Martial who shot quickly underneath Ederson.
Could have been even better
Fernandes’ movement was excellent, he has bought into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans.
His running from midfield opened up clear cut chances, and both Dan James and Anthony Martial failed to get their heads up and pass the ball to him for an easy shot at goal.
Martial’s goal was Fernandes’ third assist since he joined, adding to the three goals he has scored.
Everything he has done is so positive, he wants the ball, and he raises the standards of the players around him. He has given the crowd a huge lift too.
We can only wonder what could have been if he was here at the start of the season.
Fernandes created three chances in the victory, more than any United or City player.
He made three interceptions too as he pressed from the front and refused to give City time on the ball.
It’s so exciting to consider Fernandes’ spell at United is only just beginning and we have him for several years to come.
