Ruben Amorim was always the leading contender to land the Manchester United job once Erik ten Hag was sacked.
That was not always the case, though. After the FA Cup final, Ineos missed out on Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino as potential replacements.
That led to Manchester United keeping hold of the Dutchman until Ten Hag was sacked in October. There were as many as eight potential Ten Hag replacements that United considered, but the hierarchy quickly settled on Ruben Amorim.
Amorim was appointed head coach in November, and ironically it was former sporting director Dan Ashworth who pushed for Amorim to be hired.
The Portuguese head coach has been an immediate hit with the fan base, with supporters hailing Amorim’s honesty and transparency in the media. However, things could have turned out very differently.

Simone Inzaghi was a ‘strong contender’ for Man United job
United were linked with Inzaghi back in February, so it was hardly a surprise to see his name among the candidates to replace Ten Hag.
In October, reports claimed that Inzaghi was a “strong contender” for the United job after impressing Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos chiefs.
The 48-year-old manager has made Inter Milan a force to be reckoned with in Europe with the Italian giants reaching the Champions League final under him in 2023.
While United went head over heels to make sure Amorim was appointed, that may have been because Inzaghi snubbed United after contact was made.
He preferred to stay in Italy with Inter, and he is now targeting a historic achievement.
Simone Inzaghi’s Inter Milan side targeting a treble
Simone Inzaghi’s Inter Milan side won the Serie A title in 2023/24 and they are now looking to defend their crown this season.
After 24 games, Inter sit second in the Serie A table, just one point behind Scott McTominay’s Napoli.
On top of that, Inter finished fourth in the Champions League table, meaning they are through to the final 16 in Europe. They are also in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia, with a clash against Lazio on the horizon on February 25th.
A treble is still on the cards if Inter continue their strong run of form – meanwhile Amorim will have to target silverware in the FA Cup and Europa League this season.
United are the only unbeaten team in Uefa competition this season, and a 2-1 win over Leicester means the Red Devils are in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
