Manchester United’s pre-season performances are giving encouragement for the future.

After a 2-1 win over West Ham, Manchester United defeated Bournemouth 4-1 in Chicago to continue the team’s upward momentum.

Rasmus Hojlund, Patrick Dorgu, and Amad all scored, before Ethan Williams netted a fourth goal in the 72nd minute.

Williams was one of the big winners, announcing himself to those who had not been following his impressive progress through the academy. He’s now looking to become a part of the first team squad.

Ethan Williams ‘good enough’

Ethan Williams has been making impressive progress for Manchester United since scoring his first under-18s goal back in 2022.

He trained with the first team under Erik ten Hag and played a role in the under-18s winning the title in the 2023/24 season.

Williams was unlucky to miss out on the US tour squad in 2024, and ended up going out on loan to Cheltenham Town in January 2025.

He made an early impact for the League One club, scoring an impressive long-range goal, and his manager at the time backed him as good enough to make an impact for Manchester United.

Speaking at the time, manager Michael Flynn said: “If he carries on the way he is, he’d probably make an impact in their first team at the minute,” said Flynn.

“We’re delighted they trust us with him and I’ll do my best to make him as best as we can for the parent club, because he’s a great lad, he wants to learn and I’m pleased to have him.”

Williams has clearly put the loan spell to good use and has made the most of his chance.

Ethan Williams makes impact

Williams seized his opportunity against Bournemouth, curling a shot into the bottom corner after great work from teammate Diego Leon.

Speaking to MUTV post-match, Williams attempted to express his delight at getting on the scoresheet.

He responded: “Yeah it’s mad, it’s mad… I can’t believe it. It still hasn’t really sunk in to be honest, it’s a dream come true and bro I am just so happy right now for real.

“No for real I am thinking about all the moments and all the hard work I have been through, I just feel so blessed and so happy to be given this opportunity and to score it’s mad I can’t even explain how I am feeling to be honest.”
