Roy Keane appeared to walk back on two of his claims after the Manchester United legend caught the eye of fans with his most recent Instagram activity.

The 53-year-old Manchester United legend is widely regarded as one of the best captains and midfielders in Premier League history.

A commanding box-to-box midfielder in his prime, Roy Keane arrived at Old Trafford in 1993 after United signed him from Nottingham Forest for a £3.75m fee.

The former United midfielder excelled in the middle of the park for Sir Alex Ferguson and ascended to the captaincy after Eric Cantona’s sudden retirement in 1997.

During his time at Old Trafford, Keane famously captained United to their iconic treble win in 1999 and was widely admired for his leadership skills.

The ex-Red Devils skipper lifted seven Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and four FA Cups under former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Keane made 476 appearances for the Red Devils during his remarkable playing career and he scored 51 times and picked up 39 assists for United.

The United legend saw his Old Trafford spell come to a sudden end in 2005 after his falling out with Ferguson, who axed Keane from the Premier League club.

Man Utd legend Keane makes post

Roy Keane saw out the remainder of his career with Scottish side Celtic before he called it time on his legendary playing career in 2006.

The former Nottingham Forest star entered the world of management and coaching after his career and Keane managed both Sunderland and Ipswich Town.

Following his time in coaching, Keane has since become a leading figure for punditry on Sky Sports and a staple addition of The Overlap’s Stick to Football show.

Keane, who is known for his no-nonsense attitude on the pitch and off it, took to Instagram and shared a photo of him alongside legendary comedian Ricky Gervais.

Posting the picture for his 2.2m followers, Keane wrote: “Good day at the office.”

Keane breaks two rules with Gervais photo

Fans in the comments wasted no time pointing out that Keane appeared to break two of his own rules as part of his photo with Ricky Gervais.

Keane was hilariously poked fun at for producing a smile alongside the iconic former Office star, having previously called smiling one of the three most overrated things.

“The three most overrated things in life – listen to this – parties, smiling and fireworks,” he said on The Overlap’s Stick to Football show in 2023.

“They’re pointless. I’m telling you. I’m never again going to a party. It’s bizarre.”

During another appearance on an Overlap video, Keane told United legend Gary Neville about the time that he didn’t ask boxing legend Muhammad Ali for a photo.

“Do you remember we went to London for the BBC? We got Sports Team of the Year,” he said in 2021.

“Did you get a photograph with Muhammad Ali? Do you remember Muhammed Ali was there?”

The United legend continued: “That would have been the ideal situation if I was gonna [going to] go for anybody, listen. But if you remember the show finished, all the lads went over.

“I remember going; ‘Leave him alone.’ And I’m glad I did. He was an old man. He was not well. But that’s the one I would have got a photograph.”

Keane has now eased up on his stance over pictures and smiling after his photo opportunity with Gervais.
