Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt both felt the same way about a Manchester United legend who could “easily” belong in the top 10 players of all time.

Both Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes are among the famed ‘Class of ’92’ stars that broke into the Manchester United first team in the 1990s under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The two United legends came through the youth academy and made a real name for themselves, including playing key roles in the 1999 treble-winning team.

Butt made 385 appearances for the Red Devils and lifted six Premier League titles, a Champions League and three FA Cups before his United exit in 2004.

Scholes, on the other hand, spent his entire playing career at Old Trafford and he made 714 appearances across his two separate spells at United.

The 49-year-old former United midfielder lifted 11 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, three FA Cups and two League Cups with the club.

Scholes was part of the last United team to lift the Premier League title in the 2012-13 season before he called it time on his playing career for the second time.

Butt on underrated Man Utd legend

Speaking on the Football’s Greatest podcast, Nicky Butt dropped the ultimate praise on Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney.

Wayne Rooney arrived at Old Trafford in 2004 after Sir Alex Ferguson signed the 39-year-old former England striker from Premier League side Everton.

The ex-United captain lifted five Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, a Europa League, an FA Cup and three League Cups with the Red Devils.

Rooney made 559 appearances for the Red Devils and the United legend scored 253 times, surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton as the club’s all-time leading scorer.

Butt argued that the former Everton and Red Devils star does not receive the appreciation that he deserves, including from some United fans.

“I don’t think he’s appreciated as much as he should be, even with United fans,” he said.

“I don’t know if that’s the Liverpool-Manchester rivalry but he was phenomenal. He was a beast.

“When people say their top 10 players of all time, not a lot of people would him in that bracket but he should be, easily.”

Scholes’ high praise for Rooney

Wayne Rooney left Old Trafford in 2017 and returned to boyhood club Everton for a brief spell, with the United legend later playing for DC United and Derby County.

The former England and United skipper retired from football in 2021 and pursued a career in management, with Rooney currently in charge of Plymouth Argyle.

Paul Scholes, much like former United and England teammate Butt, waxed lyrical about Rooney’s legendary legacy on the pitch as a player.

“He was out of this world for us. The sheer effort, the pressing and tackling, never mind the quality,” he said.

“Look at his record – most goals for United, second-most for England. He just wanted to come to United, give everything, win trophies and break records.

“He just doesn’t get the credit he deserves. There’s a lot of admiration there obviously because he was brilliant but it’s not quite enough.”
